Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, 14th century Nepal, 1300-1399 Bronze with semiprecious stones 17-3/4 x 11 x 10 in. (45.1 x 28 x 25.4 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1976.05.02.S © The Norton Simon Foundation On view Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, can be identified by his primary attribute of a lotus flower. Although the lotus is missing from this finely cast bronze, the remnant of a stalk attached to the outside of his left arm offers a clue to his identity. This figure has several salient features, including an animal skin wrapped around his left forearm and an elaborately bejeweled tiara and earrings. |
