This sculpture is from the southern Indian coastal town of Nagapattinam, where Buddhism flourished under the primarily Hindu Chola rulers. A distinctive feature of Nagapattinam Buddhas is their flame-embellished cranial bump (ushnisha), which signifies transcendental knowledge. |
