Madonna and Child in Landscape, 15th century Giovanni Bellini Italian, c.1430-1516 Oil on panel 26-7/8 x 18-3/4 in. (68.3 x 47.6 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1965.1.004.P © The Norton Simon Foundation Not on View This painting is one of four sixteenth-century variants made after Bellini’s original version of a Madonna and Child called “The Dudley Madonna,” from around 1508. That latter painting is now in a private collection, but was once part of the First Earl of Dudley’s collection in London in the nineteenth century. Judging from the number of later versions and prints that were already circulating by the seventeenth century, it is clear that that composition—painted by Bellini in his seventy-fifth year—was highly admired and imitated by artists in his studio, and beyond Venice.
