Bust of Giovanni Francesco Martignone, 16th century Leone Leoni Italian, 1509-1590 Bronze 19 x 19-1/2 in. (48.3 x 49.5 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1965.1.123.S © The Norton Simon Foundation Not on View The identity of the sitter, a Milanese doctor, is based solely on a contemporary medal, and the attribution to Leone is also only conjecture and one that had been made during the Duveen era. It was owned by Duveens in 1913 in partnership with another dealer, Wildensteins, but it was not until around 1940 that the attributions to Leone Leoni, and also his son Pompeo (c. 1553–1608), were suggested by art historians such as Leo Planiscig (1887–1952), Giorgio Nicodemi (b. 1891), and Georg Swarzenski (1876–1957).
