Numbering seven portraits in all, the ensemble was a souvenir of his new daughter-in-law’s family. Depicted here is Martín Mariano, Javier’s brother-in-law. Goya’s spontaneous and fresh technique transferred easily to the small-scale format, as did his ability to communicate his subject’s individuality and state of mind. The artist’s animated yet delicate brushwork, with touches of white impasto on the sitter’s cravat, is balanced with his delicate treatment of the hair and features. This sensitive portrayal suggests Goya’s familiarity with the sitter. View Provenance |
