Pedestal with the Scene of Mara's Army, c. 1100-1150 Asia: Cambodia, 1075-1175 Bronze 3-1/4 x 11-3/4 x 7-1/2 in. (8.3 x 29.8 x 19.1 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1973.13.7.S © The Norton Simon Foundation Not on View Though missing the Buddha image it once held, this pedestal is enhanced by a lively narrative scene celebrating the enlightenment of the Buddha and his defeat of Mara, the god of desire. The left side depicts Mara on an elephant, shooting an arrow (of desire) at the Buddha, while his charging soldiers brandish arrows. On the right side, the vanquished Mara and his army ride away, with their arms raised in a gesture of admiration for the Buddha. The standing female figure in the center is the earth goddess, Thorani, who has been called on to witness the Buddha’s victory. |
