Portrait of a Gentleman, late 1630s Jan Miense Molenaer Dutch, c. 1610-1668 Oil on panel 33 x 23 in. (83.8 x 58.4 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1972.52.P © The Norton Simon Foundation On view Jan Miense Molenaer is best known for his genre scenes and compositions of elegant groupings often referred to as “merry companies.” He spent most of his life in Haarlem, and in 1636 married painter Judith Leyster. This unusual full-length portrait depicts an elegant man gesturing as if in reference to a pendant painting. Paired marriage portraits were often interrelated in this manner. The husband and wife would face one another across the picture frame, and a subtle gesture such as this would confirm their bond. View Provenance |
