Portrait of the Marquis d'Havrincourt, c. 1713 Nicolas de Largillière French, 1656-1746 Oil on canvas overall: 32 x 25 1/2 in. (81.28 x 64.77 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1965.1.034.P © The Norton Simon Foundation Not on View Largillière received his early training in Antwerp and London and went on to become one of the most successful portrait painters in the second half of Louis XIV's reign. Inspired by Flemish painting in his use of color, Largillière created rich and luxurious surfaces in which the physical presence of the sitter and the sensuous beauty of the visible world are clearly described. The luminous, sensual depiction of the Marquis' velvet wrap exemplifies this aesthetic. View Provenance |
