Bernardo Daddi combined the naturalism of Florentine artists like Giotto with the religious feeling and decorative sense of the Sienese school. His lyricism and luminous color were well suited to small-scale compositions. In this panel, one sees Daddi’s keen awareness of spatial values; the artist has accomplished a skillful adjustment between the gold ground and the delicately modeled figures. The Madonna and Child are animated and engage each other in a tender rapport. Saints John Gualbertus and John the Baptist stand at left, and Saints Francis of Assisi and Nicholas of Bari stand at right.
