Bacchante Supported by Bacchus and a Faun, 1795 Clodion (Claude Michel) French, 1738-1814 Terracotta 20 in. (50.8 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1965.1.105.S © The Norton Simon Foundation Not on View Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was one of the most creative and technically gifted French sculptors in the second half of the eighteenth century. Although skillful at executing monumental sculpture in marble, his genius was expressed most fully in his small terracottas as shown in Bacchante Supported by Bacchus and a Faun. In this exuberant ensemble a young Bacchante, or female follower of Bacchus, is playfully carried aloft by the god of wine and a faun. Clodion fuses the movement and energy of the Baroque seventeenth century with antique themes in a lighter, more delicate and more subtly sensual style than previously achieved by contemporaries.
